Thanked: 0Razor for Barber Shop
Lynn or anyone else who is a barber and uses straight razors. I have been in barber school for 6 months now and was wondering what would be a good decent razor for barber shop use doing face shaves. I have a Feather that I am shaving with now, but I think a properly honed and stropped razor is far better than my feather. I have used both and prefer to shave with a straight razor and save the Feather for around the ears and neck. Also how many would you recommend? My instructor uses a Filarmonica Doble Temple (sp) but he doesnt do a lot of shaves. When he does he uses the cheap little shavette that we got. Occasionally he will use the Filarmonica.
Thanks for your opinion

Welcome, Jim
I think the shavettes can't compare to the feel of a great straight razor. Filarmonicas are well respected, but I have yet to get mine to shaving sharp. They just seem to be a little more challenging than most. I suspect the Friodurs are the same. I recommend you go for Thiers-Issard. They take and hold a great edge in my experience. How many? How many shaves do you think you'll do each day? The custom is to do only one shave per day with each razor and that's what I'd do. *ducking*

Jim,
You should first check with your local health department (or licensing board) as to what you can legally use in your area. Quite a few areas require disposable bladed razors for commercial use. some barber's will use your own if you bring it in.
If you can use a real razor in your area... tells where you work. the Filli's are awesome razors... and they are no longer being made, still new ones availabele though. The theirs-issards razors are great as well these are still in production and come in a variety of sizes and patterns...
try a 6/8 width in silver steel ... maybe 3-5 especially if you will be needing to send them out for honing.
i'm not a barber and my barber has a few hundred razors... although he normally uses a shavette to shave customers.Last edited by syslight; 07-31-2007 at 07:36 AM.

Either that or get a bunch of Wapenica's from Poland. That way you can have a serious rotation for the same money as 1 TI. Offcourse they don't look as nice. But they shave quite well.
