Thanked: 0Unusual Design Element
Has anyone encountered a deep cross-hatch design on both sides of the shank of a straight razor? The design was so deep that it obliterated most of the company information and the logo.
The parts of the wings of an Eagle and the word "WALD" on side and the "E" on the other lead me to think Carl Friedrich ERN, Solingen-Wald. There is also a "1301" to the right of the Eagle.
I am not as interested in the identity of the razor as I am about the design. Seems to be to improve the grip while Stropping.

Thanked: 156Looks like someone used a checkering file on the tang right over the logo...and from my opinion it may have belonged to a barber...those gimps dont help out the grip that much when you're shaving your own face but when you use it like a barber those may come in handy.

Thanked: 634I have on many razors and had a thread on it. Best guess is they did not pass quality control and were marked as seconds. Someone thought the grooves gave a better grip. Open to all suggestions.

Thanked: 603This razor was manufactured by the US Mint for the DOJ. As a previous poster posited, there were some "seconds"; nevertheless, they were sold, but all identifying information was first redacted.
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

If that were the case they would have ground off all identifying info. You can still see all the info here and grinding it would have been faster and easier.
Besides, back in the day seconds were not what we think of today. "Seconds" would be viewed as defective items to be avoided no matter the discount. People were craftsmen back then and selling a second would be a blot on their reputation. If an item were imperfect it would have been tossed. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
