Default where to get hardware for scales?

Where can you buy the hardware for scales? I just checked Lowes, Hobby Lobby, Micheals, Joanns Fabrics, etc. None have anything small enough to use as a pivot pin bolt. What are you suppose to use as a pin for the back holding the two scales and wedge together also?

As both of these guys say, plus i get pin rods at Ace Hardware. You might have to ask for them as at my store they keep them behind the counter.

i must admit this is the first time i am making scales. I got a razor from this group a long time ago and the scales got messed up in the mail. I just now got around to making the scales. They are cherry wood with cherry stain. Name: DSC00048.jpg

I do have some brass rods that i believe are 1/16 from a set of locksmith stuff. I wonder if i can just use those? What do you do just cut them a little longer than the 2 scales and wedge and peen it down over the wood?

    There is the guy! ^^^

As far as pinning goes, There is a lot of info in our library on how to go about it. Plus lots of vids on Youtube. Look up GSSIXGUN on Youtube and watch a few of his vids. Its not hard, but it takes a bit of practice before you get great looking peens. By plenty of rod and practice peening 2 popcycle sticks together. Practice is always better than the first try.

Your scales look nice in the pic. Just be sure they are thin enough. I like wood scales about .080 inches thick. Too thick and they wont flex as well as they should. So watch some vids!

thanks for the tips. And that is a lot more thinner than i thought. I have mine set at 1/8 inch thickness.

The scales i swapped it from had a really small bolt as the pivot pin so i assumed that that was the way for all of them. Didnt know about the peening method, thanks.

Oh boy...I know about the nutsy boltsy pins.!!

Gave that up in short order.

Like Jerry said...Practice..!! And keep the scales thin, and your pins small n tight. It is pretty easy, but there's lots to learn before it all comes together.
