Thanked: 0For Barber's Use razors?
Hi folks,
Wanted to ask if I could get some knowledge dropped on me regarding razors that read "For Barber's Use" (or something to that effect) on the tang.
Based on the few that I've seen in person, they seem (at least to my non-discerning eyes) to be on the taller and thicker side, which I'm starting to enjoy.
Wanted to see if I could ask the more knowledgeable folks if they have more insight on them (assuming historically they were, in general, made for use by professionals, but doesn't mean a private individual can't use them....what are some common themes in their design, materials, etc.).
Thank you!
Josh

It's a sprat to catch a mackerel, many good quality Japanese razors are stamped for Barbers use, not many Barbers own them there's your answer.

Thanked: 4830I have always suspected that it was in part marketing. As in professional quality. It seems they were trying to set themselves apart from the cheap brands.

Thanked: 581Nope, they are actually for barbers use only. It is illegal for the general public to use them..

razors were common items produced by the zillions. Every retailer wanted their wares to stand out from the pack so they put all kinds of things on the blade and package and since there were no consumer protection laws you were only limited by your imagination.

The only reasonable explanation I've ever heard is that the wider blades on the English FBU's may have meant that barbers wouldn't have to wipe lather and such off the blades quite as frequently. But I suspect, as the others have said, it's mostly a marketing thing.
