    Funny, when I looked at the OP I didn't even see the broken scales, the blade looked OK. I had to go back and look again after reading down a bit.

    Indeed, I would save the freak-out for when the actual tool gets damaged rather than its relatively inexpensive scales. Consider yourself fortunate Murphy gave you a second chance with this fine blade. *
