I thought I'd add an update. Unfortunately my great grandfather's razor won't be returning to service as Glen found a crack under the active rust. I won't lie and say that I'm not disappointed but I'm choosing to look on the bright side and remember the amazement that I felt when I found this razor. Instead of being returned to use, this blade will find a place of prominence as a keepsake, reminding me of my forefathers.

Damn I'm sorry to hear about the crack. But as you said the positive is that you'll have a keepsake. You won't be the only person to have a non functioning razor on display.

Nice story and poignantly written. Thank you for sharing your memories. Too bad about the crack in the razor and my condolences on losing your father. I lost my dad in June of 2016.

Although it's been a while It's still hard sometimes. I miss him deeply.
I also understand the dearness of heirlooms. I have, among a few other things, my dad's straight razor which I believe originally belonged to his father. It's a J.A. Henckels twin works 401. Fortunately his is in pretty good condition. It had some pitting which was not bad and I was able to sand it out and clean it up to a usable state.

I say I think it was my grandfather's because I didn't see him use it very much and only when I was young not long after my grandfather died. Mostly he used a trapdoor DE exactly like the one in the picture but not the same one. His I was unable to find. I think he wore it out. That is however his Hazel Atlas milk glass shaving mug.
As I'm sure you do I cherish these items dearly. Nothing is more precious to the heart than something that was handed down from a loved one.
