W. Busold / Solingen-Ohligs

I just bought this on ebay.. It's a NOS razor. Looks in pretty good condition. I have never heard of it though and couldn't find much on google. Nothing in fact. Only 1 link to a German razor forum where nobody had seen it before either. Do any of you guys know this W.Busold? I know Ohligs is a place in Solingen, so quality-wise I assume it should be a good razor. Thanks in advance for any info

Alas, I've got no really useful information on the company for you, but those are definitely some interesting looking scales. Planning on honing it up and giving it a trial shave any time soon?

I imagine it will take a week or two before I get it, and then I'll have to send it off to get honed as I am no honer myself. So I think it will be a while before I get to test shave with it. And I would like to find out a little more about it before I do anything with it since it is a new and "untouched" razor.

I had my best ebay weekend ever. I also scored a Boker 'King Cutter', a Griffon XX '00', a Germania Cutlery Works 'Colonial Razor' and 2 very nice looking 'No Name' razors.. All in very good condition. ALL totaling $90. I did lose 2 auctions though. A Mappin & Webb I really wanted and a Wade & Butcher.. Even still.. today I am a very happy man. (Albeit quite sleepy after staying up all night following up different auctions on these razors. I think I slept 2 hours last night. The things we do for razors )

I just opened a christmas present from my wife and inlaws that is an identical razor to this. Mine is definitely not NOS. It has been used by my father in-aw and his father in-law before that. My mother in law told me that it was purchased by her dad in about 1913 when he started shaving. They lived in East Germany when he bought it.

I hope what little information I had helps. It should give you a rough estimate of the age, but I don't know for sure. Good luck with your search for info, and let me know if you find anything else.

However, I just noticed that yours is a little different than mine. I don't have any pics to post right now, so I'll just try to explain.

Mine has the number 40, and the word BUSSARD stamped on the front where yours is stamped W. Busold. Mine has the W. Busold Solingen Ohligs stamped on the back where yours is blank. Mine also has a design stamped on both sides between the blade and the words that looks similar to the metal looking piece in the scales.

Someone commented on Ebay UK that they felt the ones that were being sold on Ebay were not authentic. I have no way to know if they are or not, but I did notice the above differences between the one that I know the history of and the ones I have been able to find for sale. Some of the ones I have seen on Ebay also has Solingen etched in a pattern on the face of the blade as well. Hopefully I didn't burst your bubble, and your new pruchase will serve you well for years to come.

There was another post with scales very similar to that razor posted just yesterday, at first I thought is was the same razor. Don't know if they are related in any way.
