Thanked: 480Interesting 3 pin Spike..
So I had been on the hunt (ain't I always?) For a 6/8 Union Cutlery razor when I spotted a 3 pin Spike in a pile of other shave stuff. Took a chance and went for it. Not a 6/8 sad to say, but a generous 5/8. But what makes it interesting is the tang stamps. Standard issue SPIKE on the face, but where every other spike I have handled was manufactured in NY, this one is manufactured in Morovia Iowa
We all know that American Hone also was a NY business that took its Frictionite, and moved, does anybody know if Union Cutlery was connected to them? Did they move at the same time, or did one follow the other? It's not a deep mystery, but I myself am fascinated and curious as to the history behind it.
And ignore the feline photographers assistant, he refused to leave the backdrop, so I Made him the backdrop. 😝

Looks like they were indeed related. In September of 1910 the city of Olean, NY offered Wallace Brown (the president of Union Cutlery) tax incentives to relocate his businesses to Olean. He did so, and one of the new companies he launched there was American Hone.
Found this on a timeline of the history of KA-BAR.

Thanked: 480Neat! and Extra Neat! So they didnt just pick up their ball.. I mean hone, and go home, they took the Spike with them. Every Spike I have ever honed has been a HARD pita. I wonder if the new location brought with it new steel? I will get to honing it some time this week, and see!
