I now have many W&B For Barbers Use 8/8 and above. They are fantastic and IMO with the steel they have they can not be matched. Of course I am biased. With that being said, I am definitely going to buy a Sheffield style GD. Like you said Mark, with some horn scales it will look spot on and be a great practice razor with plenty of steel to muck around with. Thank you for sharing this!

Thanked: 1081Steel, for the money it's worth chancing. I know everyone gives GD a hard time but I've seen more than a few Thiers Issards with huge wavy bevels, Dovos with geometry issues and don't get me started on some custom makers going for silly money.
They are what they are, like email or loath em, but like you I think they are worth a punt.

Thanked: 49Definitely. The issue imo is comparing a $30 brand new razor to a $200 one. I know vintages can be had for cheap. Nothing wrong with that at all. but the truth is they shave as well as they're honed. Every GD I have gets an initial 600 chosera to get it in line. Then after that it's like any other. The zys are also a good consideration imo. They're about $10 shipped and have no heavy heel and by and large sit flat on the hone. They have no stabilizers either to get in the way.

Ya' know. I absolutely love my W&B's and would never compare one of these to it. I also have J.A. Henckels and Bokers and Shumates and Robesons that are All nicer but they all cost more than these. I think the take away is it is a $30 razor that you can actually shave with and seems to be improving. Who knows. Maybe 100 years from now they will be as respected as the aforementioned brands. All of them had to gain market share. They all started from scratch.
In the final analysis (for myself at least) it is a $30 razor and cannot be compared to iconic brands...yet at least. It is a fun little novelty peice. Am I sorry I bought it? No. Would I buy a bunch of them or choose it as an only razor? No. But as a member of a collection for someone with severe RAD it is worth having.Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend. PR 27:17

Thanked: 315Those new designs do look pretty cool. If I ever have a better workspace I may get one to customize. I've seen some pretty cool stuff done with them.

So,
Following the rather facile video I posted yesterday, I have had an opportunity to shave with the razor.
A little more information about the blade, it is a hollow, shoulderless, smiling blade with a barbers notch. It is not a heavy Sheffield type chopper. It is actually quite refined. The bevels were small and even. no jimps. finishing is OK, 7/10.
In the video, I commented that the scales were a dyed soft wood, I now think that they are actually a hard wood.
The strop though clearly a very cheaply produced item, is actually quite usable and would make a nice compact travel strop.
The Razor was actually sharp enough for a reasonable shave straight out of the box. the shave was fine, I really don't have anything bad to say about the Razor, I will not even qualify my comments by referring to the price point.
This was quite unexpected, I anticipated and was prepared for, a much worse opinion.Last edited by easyace; 07-09-2019 at 09:25 AM. Reason: Typo
