Slather it with WD40, Wipe it off on occasion. Slowly see what you have.
As Tim said....Likely nothing. The rust might be the coolest thing about it? Leave it be, I say.

There is the Coke way. Drop it in a glass of Coke for a day and see what happens. That stuff is toxic.

Ive heard it will clean stains from your concrete driveway, like club soda does to your clothing and carpets.

    Or not to clean it.

I just had this idea instead of wind chimes maybe Tom could bury a few in his back yard and make some archaeological finds in a few years.

I used some mono fishing line on a set of wind chimes once. Line rotted and the blades fell off. Lucky I found them with the weed eater and not the lawn mower! The spider-wire line seems to be lasting.

Many years ago I had an elderly neighbor who's lawn was so nice and green. One day I asked him what he did to have that beautiful green lawn.

Seems that years before he'd taken old railroad spikes and driven them in on a 6 inch grid. He said that the grass got the iron that was decaying off of the spikes and that's what made his lawn so green.

I'd hate to be the poor SOB that went to use a rototiller on that lawn.

Used to be a fella back in the old days who would come around and sell you brake parts and turn your drums and rotors on a lathe in the back of his van. Told me he sprinkled the iron shavings on his lawn.

My younger brother used to bring iron/steel dust/shavings down and put them on our mother's rose bed, seems to work.
