Years ago in the 70’s when I worked in downtown Los Angles and wore a suit and tie, one of the guys in the office had a contact in the garment district.

Silk ties were selling for 35-50 dollars or more in good department stores, if you went through his guy you could buy ties for $2, but you had to buy a gross, 144, and it had to be cash.

So a group of guys would get together on a group buy and go down the factory, they had a 20x20 foot show room with racks with wooded dowels on the wall that displayed about 4 inches of a tie, you could pull out the tie and try it on. Every inch of wall was covered by ties, hundreds all grouped by different prints and colors. I bought 40 ties and other guys bought the rest to make the gross.

A gal pulled my ties from stock and took me to the back room were gals were sewing ties. She said, “What label do you want on them”. “Label?” I said. She pulled open a couple thin drawers of a cabinet that was next to and under her sewing machine table, Neatly stacked were rows of hundreds of labels of all the brand name tie makers, the same ties that sold for $35-50.

“Yea, we make all of these ties”, she said and laughed.
