Its on the heavy side of 6/8ths. after I removed the small chips frown, then imparted a slight smile back into the blade. So originally I'd say it was 13/16 or 7/8

Mine is a 7/8ths but it gives an optical illusion of being 8/8ths

Does anyone know : is there any purpose to a tapered straight razor?

It seems like just more work for the grinder..

Man....that's like asking what the barbers notch was for.
Aesthetics would be my only guess.

Here's a Marshes and Shepard taper blade I'd picked up recently.

    Doesn't look rite to me.

I cant help but think that a guy some where in the past honed his razor with too much pressure at the toe end creating that shape by accident.
Then came along his buddy the blacksmith, saw it, thinking that's how they are supposed to look and went on to making them that shape. Thus the story continues..

    I spin a great yarn :/

That's what I thought when I found that one in the wilds. Then I noticed the absence of the hone wear.!

Go back and look at Zak’s (voidmonster) posts; some razors were apparently made tapered like this - the thing to look for is if the spine is tapered accordingly to maintain the same bevel angle. Not easy I think!
