Thread: I stained my first razor !!

I am pretty new to straight razors. Recently I bought my first straight. A Dovo "best quality" I'm still pretty rusty (so to speak). But am gradually developing a better technique.

I must have left a few drops of water on the razor, because I now have several dark spots on the shiny metal.

I tried rubbing on some oil. Then I tried an automotive polishing compound. This helped a bit, but the stains are still there. I thought of moving up the abrasive scale to rubbing compound, but thought I would first seek out everyones advice.

Maas is probably the favorite product that most of the guys use here at SRP. It should work fine.

I agree Maas should do the trick.

Tom, try polishing with metal polish and some cloth, but in direction with the lines of the grind, scratch marks. Perpendicular to the edge. That will help.

As others have said, I'm sure a metal polish like Maas will get it out. But minor stains like this are almost inevitable on razors that are actually used. I tend not to worry about them because they can always be polished out easily.

I'm on the other end of the sectrum, I love the way carbon steel will gain a patina (not rust mind you). Even my ebite aquired blades only get the surface rust removed, I leave the patina alone to do what it does. This patina will eventually help against minor rust from forming. Not rust from water drops mind you but the stuff that can form from just dry storage, oxidization.

As long as it's not red rust, I wouldn't worry too much about water spots.
