Thanked: 0Le Grelot
Hi Guys,
I happened to get hold of a mint Le Grelot, 5/8 full hollow.
Anyone got any info on these razors.
Ill post some foots soon. Its a lovely piece of steel.
Also, I have read somewhere that pre-ban ivory items are now illegal to own and sell.
Is that true?........I have a 'friend' who has a lovely Sheffield shoulderless, with ivory scales. Dates around 1890's, and is in a lovely red leather coffin. Its perfect unused condition. I'll get some fotos from 'him' to post!
Regards
Rob.

Vintage Le Grelot razors are top draw shavers, I'm not sure regarding pre-ban Ivory, I'm sure you can sell a razor with original Ivory scales, not sure if you can sell it if it's for international import only to be sold in the country of origin, having said that I'm not 100% sure myself, put some photo's up we all like looking at razors.

Thanked: 3227As Jamie said vintage Grelot razors have a fine reputation. If you want more info on importing/exporting ivory do a net search for Cities Treaty on ivory. You may also want to check you own country's regulation regarding the sale of ivory within your own borders. I do know it can get tricky.

They’re French of course, they bought Le Jaguar when they went OOB, and Le Grelot was bought by Thiers-Issard when they went OOB.
All that I’ve had were superbly ground. Steel is on the hard side if not very hard (the framebacks). Some were beautiful, some were users. Just great razors. My doorstop is a Nakayama

Hi Rob, while there's no law against private ownership of ivory containing items in Australian jurisdictions, buying and selling - especially where it involves import or export - is a different story. See https://www.environment.gov.au/biodi...ercial/vintage for the current Australian requirements. It would seem that smaller low value items, like most razors, fall into the too hard basket, or rather the too much trouble and expense category. I believe the US requirements have recently become more severe. Others who are better informed might chime in on this point.

From the Fish and Wildlife Service.
Under Federal law, you can sell your African elephant ivory within your state (intrastate commerce) if you can demonstrate that your ivory was lawfully imported prior to the date that the African elephant was listed in CITES Appendix I (January 18, 1990). ... Some states have laws prohibiting or restricting sale of ivory. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 3215“I have a 'friend' who has a lovely Sheffield shoulderless, with ivory scales.”
I think I know that guy, I have bought some advertised, “Faux Ivory scales, that look and feel” just like real Ivory” ;-)
Here in California, Fish & Game was crazy about Ivory a few years ago, inspecting Antique stores and shows in plain clothes, but seemed to have calmed down a bit.
I still find it in the wild, and not at “Ivory prices”. I think folks just do not want to deal with the drama and dump it.
