Thanked: 14Shorty razors
A few years ago, I wanted to add a shorty razor to my collection--I liked the Portland Sprite. In looking recently, it seems difficult to find anyone making short razors, so it seems that it's a niche within the niche of straight razor shaving. The reason I'm looking at a shorty is I feel I have better control with the shorter Feather AC razor I have and I wanted to add something similar that wasn't a replaceable blade. After doing a little research, it seems my options are to place a custom order, try a Kamisori (or foldable Kamisori), or find someone who's turned a damaged razor into a working shorter blade. The last option is likely the cheapest (my goal until I know how I like it), but I don't like that most of them I see are in full size scales. There's one on the BST right now where someone made custom scales for a short blade razor--it's beautiful and seems like what I want, but I'm not in a spot to buy today (thinking more of something to ask for as a gift later this year).
Any insights into pros/cons of Kamisori vs. shortened western style straight razors? There are some folding Kamisori on eBay for $50-$80--but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to get them honed (plus I'm left handed which could be a problem if they are one-sided grinds). Thanks.

Thanked: 59These are all stubbies with western grinds (either handed). These are all honed and I can ship one to you to play with if you want to try something before going out and spending money. Stubbies are my preference as well for the same reasons that you gave. I feel that I have more control and they don't really need to be any longer. I haven't ever seen a factory Kamisori with a western grind.

Thanked: 14I've been using the stubby razors @DVW let me borrow. My hat's off to DVW on the edges--these are superb. I've really enjoyed them and will still keep my eye out for one, but there are definitely pros and cons to consider.
First, the weight is not what I'm accustomed to. These aren't as light as my Feather AC, but the difference to my 6/8 PRC is more noticeable than I expected. Stropping was simple and straight forward, although it was odd seeing such a small blade on my 3" wide strops. Maneuverability could be seen as both a pro and a con. On the big flat spots (like my cheeks), the short blade requires extra strokes; however, on the curved spots (chin and jawline), the shorter blade really shines. I still haven't tried the non-folding razor (my wife says it looks more like a camping tool or weapon), so I'll use that one before I send these back tomorrow.

Thanked: 59I'm glad that you are liking them. The non-folding one that I sent you is a tank of a razor. If you thought those others were heavy, wait until you try that big boy. Most kami style razors are not that bulky, so don't think that they all feel like that one does. It does shave well though. It is one of my favorites to use. See if you can get your hands on a traditional Kami before you make up your mind.

Its not difficult, and quite fun.Mike

Thanked: 14I used the big Kamisori style razor this morning. I've never used anything bigger than 6/8, so it took me a while to figure out how to maneuver it, and I didn't have time to try and figure out how to get under my nose or shave my chin. I laughed and thought I'd have to grow a goatee and moustache if that was the only razor I had.
Anyway, the razors are safely tucked away for their journey back home. I really appreciate the chance to try out the styles before buying anything new--but I will keep my eye out for a stubby and will now give some more thought to a Kamisori. Thanks again, @DVW.

Thanked: 59You are very welcome. I have a have a goatee and mustache so that big one has never been a problem for me. I never gave it a second thought, so that is good feedback to hear.
