What you have asked is akin to "I want to buy a new car that is fun and practical". What do you recommend?
We need to know your budget and also what your dad has been using and what he might prefer.
There are a zillion DEs on the market starting at probably ten bucks going up to around eight hundred dollars or more. There are new and there are vintage.

I'd look at Feather, Timeless, Rex and Merkur.

Thanked: 3224You could consider an adjustable DE which would let you fine tune it for a shave that is most comfortable to the user. I'd look at the Rockwell 6S stainless steel adjustable DE.

Man, a Merkur slant 37c is a great DE, IMO. Smooth, easy, and effective.

As said, you're going to receive a lot of different suggestions. I suppose I have sensitive skin and a thick beard, and by coincidence, I also was born in 1963. After nine years of using straights, I have recently returned to safety razors out of curiosity. One razor I have tried recently is the Razorock SLOC sold by Italian Barber. SLOC stands for self-lubricating-open-comb. Although it looks aggressive, it is actually a very mild razor, with the slots on the head filling up with shave soap or cream during the pass protecting the skin. At first, the shave wasn't close enough, but in pairing it up with KAI stainless steel blades, which are a little bit wider than standard DE blades, a closer shave is achieved. It's only ~$20; the KAI blades are a little pricey, but worth it IMO.
Italian Barber is in Canada, so there's probably no way that you would have it by Christmas.Last edited by Brontosaurus; 12-19-2020 at 05:26 AM.

If you havent bought one by now I'm afraid its too late for Christmas. You should have started looking in much earlier. Good luck on whatever you go with.
It's just Sharpening, right?
