Back when I shaved with a DE I tried to find a Gillette DE manufactured on my birth year but of course my luck would have it they started the date code in 1950 and I was born in 1949.

If it were me -- on either side of this equation -- I'd ask a few questions:

    • Is your Dad clean-shaven? Bearded? In-between?
    • How often does your Dad shave? (daily, twice/thrice-weekly, weekly)
    • Are they leisurely shaves, or hurried?
    • Does your Dad enjoy shaving?

Most of us on SRP are in the "N+1" category of razor ownership; I am. Also, I no longer shave daily... hell, I'm lucky if I shave once-a-week. So, if your Dad's in the "Erev Shabbos" or "Sunday-go-to-meeting" category, my vote would be for an attractive, minty, silver/rhodium/gold-plated Gillette DE (TTO or 2/3-piece) safety razor. Alternatively, if he's a more regular shaver, I'd suggest a classy 'n classic Schick SE safety razor.

They're out there... on eBay, and elsewhere... <shameless plug for SRP's B/S/T forum> -- it's usually just a question of budget, item, and patience.

You do know this is a straight razor forum, right?
Most of us have used DE razors in the past and a few of us still use them but 95% of what goes on here is a straight razor. In the past, I too used a Muhle razor and it's a good one. There are plenty that cost lots of money that are very spendy, Look into Above the tie. That is a very nice set and the set comes with different base plates so you can adjust your shave to what you want. Made of Stainless steel so it will last a lifetime.

As far as blades, that is a personal thing. You can buy variety packs that come with many different brands at some shave store on-line. But my favorite was the Gillette Silver/Blue.

Good luck on what you find and welcome to SRP. Now, are YOU ready to learn to shave with a straight? lol.
