Thanked: 0Well.. expect a package Mr Abrams - I give up .. :(
I tried following the pyramid diagrams on honing my Renassiance DOVO I just got from ClassicShaving.com and its still not sharp ehough to cut a hair that I lay across it - and when I shave with it it scrapes me like crazy and my chin espeicallys in bad shape afterwards burning and hurting.. its like scrapping sandpaper.. is this normal? My safety razor from CS.com like people used in the old days shaves 100x better.. Soo ... I next day air'd my DOVO to L. Abrams via the $20 charge on Classic Shaving.com and hope he can get it going.. and I bit the bullet and ordered the DVD from CS.com as well.. hope it helps .. ..

Very good move - both getting Lynn to hone your razor and buying the DVD as well. Look at it this way, once you get the razor back from Lynn, you'll have a benchmark to work towards. Once you know how a straight razor is supposed to shave, you can work on recreating that.
Good luck, and keep us posted on how it goes.

Don't do what I did. I had Lynn hone my first razor and when I got it I stropped it before the first use. Screwed up the edge. So when you get it back, use it first before stropping. I would also recommend watching his DVD before even stropping it.

Thanked: 0Yeah - I'm not sure when to expect the razor back from Lynn.. week? Two? But I definitely plan on watching the DVD first.. I'm just concerned my strop, the shorter DOVO CS.com recommended for me, is adequate. Does his DVD go into all aspects? Different types of strops, how to use each type, etc.. when to do what, etc ?

The DVD is over 3 hours long - about the only thing that he doesn't go into is forging the steel for the blades.
There are sections for honing and right after a section on strops. Hanging, paddle, box, looms, pastes, etc. I'd also suggest after that you view the preshave chapter where he demonstrates stropping technique.

Um, still in "Boston Jeff"?
If so, for a cup of coffee we could go over honing and stropping techniques!
Hell, I can even go over how to de- and re-pin a razor and more!

Lynn's DVD is awesome...and has probably saved more faces than he'll ever know.
+1 on the benchmark thing...I have some blades from heavyduty and joshearl...I still need to get some from Lynn...then, when I get to the point I want to hone a blade I intend to put on my face, I will have three standards to compare to.

I'll be in Boston for a short business trip next week and could really benefit from an in-person honing tutorial. Unfortunately, between travel and work in Boston, my only free time is Wednesday late afternoon. Any chance I could buy you a drink around 4:30 or 5:00? I'll be working near Boston Common until 4:30, then have a dinner appointment at 6:30 in Cambridge.
