It could be like the letter stamped on Zippo's it represents the year of manufacture.
Maybe its the same with the TI.

    Default Zip Lip ----- secret?

Yes I think you are correct about the year of manfacture.

Some companies like Zippo and Case knives tell the public what they stand for. People who collect them can cataloge them. While other companies keep this a deep dark secret.

Actually, I posted the same question about my recent TI (Stamped V) and was told it was an intemediate steel (between the existing runs and the almost released Silver Wing). Not quite as hard as the new one but a point or two more than the older Silver Steel models.... Don't know if that's right but it made sense to me. What I can tell you is it shaves like a son of a gun! Great razor!

    Enjoy yours!

The letter on the back of the tang represents the heat treat lot for the steel used in each batch of razors. TI introduced two new steels over the past year or two and both I think carry this new designation where as the older ones do not. The Silverwing is the newest and may not even be released yet. Lynn and I both received samples of these for testing, but there is a new steel, now know at TI as "the old new steel" that also carries a heat treat letter. Both of these have a higher carbon content than the older steel.

    Tony,

what did you think of the newest production razor? One vendor said they will be available for shipping in november Can't say i'll buy one right away (i think you'll be paying too much for the "latest and greatest") but it's definately on my to-buy list

The TI Razor with the letter Y on the reat of the tang is a 5/8 Wheat Field Pattern Decorated Back that I bought from www.shaving-and-razor-shop.com.

I must say this razor is perfect a real work of art. How it shaves? Average.
