Thanked: 0Just bought an old Wade and Butcher
Was trying to find a v-day gift for the gf and found this.
As you can see the scales are chipped all to hell and the blade is all scuffed up and a bit corroded. I'm completely new to straight razors, but I really liked the size, shape, and feel of this blade.
The best I can tell, it says "Wade & Butcher / ???????rated / Fine India Steel Razor" on the blade.
So how did I do? I was hesitant to pay $12 for something in such poor shape, but I'm a sucker for instant gratification.
Can anyone direct me to some info/history on Wade and Butcher razors? I'd eventually like to shave with this thing, but right now it won't even shave hair on my hand!Last edited by Inverness11; 02-09-2008 at 06:19 PM.

Thanked: 416I would say you did well for 12 dollars. These are very well thought of and make great shavers. althought flowers might have been a more appropereate Vday gift

Lets see...there is almost no hone wear...hmm...The blade is in good shape...hmm...Hell yeah you did good!!! I would've paid three times that and I am certain that many people would pay even more!
What is the etching on the blade?

It says celebrated and it is made in the 1890s or earlier!

I just looked at mine, as I have the same razor, and it says Sheffield England on the tang which means mine was made in the 1890s or later!Last edited by JMS; 02-09-2008 at 07:02 PM. Reason: additional information

Hehehe congrats! Your GF is going to love this on so many different levels... Welcome to the world of RAD and everything else that comes along with it.
That being said, nice catch! It will make a great shaver.

Thanked: 0Thanks guys. 1890s...I had no idea it was that old. I feel bad for haggling that poor antique dealer for what I thought was a POS.
How do I go about restoring this?

Wade and Butcher had several different makes, and that is a W & B box, but its for a Bow razor and you did not buy the bow model!
