    Default Help identifying scale materials

I was wondering if anybody could help me in identifying these scale materials. They both stand up to the hot pin test. The first one appears to be semi-translucent. The second one somebody carved 40 into it. I think these could be bone, but I'm not real sure how to tell.

The first is horn, possibly buffalo. The second is ivory (it has a characteristic "grain" which is different from that of bone).

    Cheers,
    Duncan.

Funny that because I have just posted a question about numbers scratched on ivory & there is another!

The one I have with a 40 on it also has 4 slash marks. I was wondering if these should be sanded out and the ivory repolished?
