That's good thinking Doc! That information is excellent Yorkshireman - would you mind re-posting it in the Bengall's Band of Brothers thread?

As soon as I have time, I will post a slightly more complete version on the B.B.of B. thread.

    Default Bengall razor??

    Hi,
A couple of years back we found a box containing some straight razors and some other wood working tools at the dump. We sold the razors didn't note what they were, there were also 2 homemade carving knives one I was using today to pry off a lid when the handle broke. I cleaned up the blade which looks like a modified razor marked Bengall and T R Cadman & sons on tang. Couldn't tell before but now looks like it was designed as a razor (pivot with finger lever) see image attached. Did a Google and found this site. Anyone confirm that this started out as a razor?? Thanks

Yup. That was definitely a razor. I have one that looks just like it, with the exception that the rest of it is there.

It is one of my best shavers.

Thanks HNSB! If I can manage to get a decent edge on it (not my forte) I think I might make it a nice new handle, maybe out of Butternut and add it to my carving tools.

O.k. I now have 2 Bengall razors ones an 6/8th's square point with plain black handles, and the other one, ( Received today) is a 5/8th's square point with yellow plastic type handles with a bit of scroll work on the Tang, Both of mine say Bengall on one side of the Tang, and "Made In England" on the other. Can anyone help me date these razors? I know some of them will say T.R. Cadman & Sons, but when did they start using their name on the razors? I've looked around but can't seem to find any information. Thank you.

I know that they used the T.R. Cadman & Sons but not when they started using it. . I also know they used the "Made in Sheffield England" Tang mark but again I can't find the dates that they used it.

Yes I know about the Mickinley Act, which means my razors where made after 1909, But when was the "CITY" of origin required to be stamped on them? been looking but can't find it. In 1914 they required the stamp to in English, If I can find when the treaty folks required the "CITY" of origin" I can at least get close, Thomas Cadman died in 1917, I'm thinking sometime AFTER this and when they required the city to be stamped on the tang is when these razors were made, looks like some more internet searching.
