Thanked: 0How Common?
My question for the day is:
How common are blades larger than 8/8ths?
I have seen quite a few 8/8ths straights running around out there but very rarely do I see anything larger.
I'm not really counting the modern customs straights but more interested in the vintage blades.
How many SRP members have something that size in their collection? If you have one what type of blade is it? Wedge? Hollow ground etc. Who makes it? Post pictures if you have them.

Thanked: 0I just listed a WANTEED ad in the BST section for an 8/8 or 9/8. From what few responses I have had so far, (only a couple hours ago) it seems that they are rare, and expensive if you can find them. I would like to know this as well though. How rare?

Larger razors like the ones you guys are talking about are the most rare out there. Partly because they were more often used by barbers than normal guys so they actually got used up and partly I assume they tended to cost more so fewer guy bought them.
A lot of guys also seem to prefer them to the smaller sizes so that when a shaver gets one he keeps it.
One of the mods here, JLStorm, has nothing but razors in the 8/8 and larger class hes the real expert on finding these meat cleavers.

Once the 20th century began and they started using hollow grinds there was no need for the big razors and they gravitated towards 5/8s and 6/8s. So most of the big ones are really old 19th century types so fewer survive.

Razors bigger than 8/8 are really rare and usually expensive when they pop up. If you want one then your best bet would probably be to get one custom made. I don't really see the point of having a razor that big though. Your whiskers only see the very edge of the blade.
