Thanked: 13249Old School Shaving
This morning in the SOTD I used my NOS Craftsman.... The one thing that made this interesting was, in chat last night, Gugi & I were talking, and he brought forth a great idea... "This is a 50-60 year old razor that had never been used" He said "Don't hone it, just to see what razor's were like back then" I figured hey he has a point so I went with it this morning...
I stropped like a madman linen then leather 60/100 showered , then lathered and stropped again 25/50 re-lathered (hey I was trying to make this as smooth as possible) and proceeded to shave (very carefully)
OK that was a surprise, yes the razor shaved, actually quite smooth, Was it as smooth as my honed blades, NO was it a tugging, pulling match, NO....
Great idea Gugi, a rare experience to see how a factory blade was presented in the old days, I would say without a doubt I could take a fine barbers hone and bring this blade to within very comfortable tolerances quickly and easily...

PS: I can't wait to see what happens with the edge after I actually hone it up, my way to my personal shave ready standards

I had a similar experience with a NOS DD Special No. 1. I shaved straight out of the envelope and it was smooth, with no pulling, but it was duller than I'm able to get off a coticule, so I didn't get as close a shave.

Thanks for sharing what that unique experience, and that is one good looking blade also.
