Default Need a Recommendation: 7/8" SS

Hello, you probably have not seen my name around a lot. Even though I joined this site last summer and got a 5/8" razor from a member on here, I have not had the chance to use it until recently.

I am still very much a newb, as I only have 4 shaves under my belt (in the last two weeks). However, I have been using a DE for over a year and am really making progress with every shave. And I truly enjoy the challenges I still face (no pun intended, although it might be a good one )

I find that the razor I currently own is light and would like to try out a 7/8". My reasoning is that the heavier blade would perhaps be a better choice for my tough, tough beard. I do not blame the blade for anything, as I am sure that with more practice it will provide a good shave.

So I come here to ask for recommendations on a razor that has a 7/8" SS blade. I have seen a couple of options on classcshaving, but being new, I have no idea what is worth getting.

Please, masters of the straight razor universe, provide me with some insight.

These are Jim's exact words (see http://vintagebladesllc.com/vshop/xc...cat=168&page=1)

    These are not "regrinds"

    Beautiful razors, they are, though.

There aren't many 7/8s SS razors out there save for the customs. The henckels is about the only one I can think of offhand.

There may not be many different brands out there, but the ones that are (Henckels Friodur) are great razors and you wouldn't be disappointed if you got one, guaranteed.

I stand corrected if Jim says they are not regrinds. Although there may be some difference of opinion as to what is a regrind. My understanding is that regrinding can describe the finish grinding of a razor after heat treatment. Thus if these "not new old stock razors" have blades which have had finish grinding done to them after their cache was discovered, they might be regrinds. ?

Regardless, they are very nice razors. I know; I have one.

    Default Newbie and Razors

Ok here is how I see it, i am scottish and have only really bought razors that have pleased my eye and my pocket...lol...a little tight sometimes is what I mean....

That being said I have a soft spot for Genco and Red Imps, the one made by Morris and not Case, its a babe to hone and was the first I ever successfully honed myself after chipping it on embedded grit on my 8000 norton.

Without telling you what I think of any razor I think can I afford it and how will it hone...as far as Ive been led to believe SS razors take a hell of an edge but are a little harder to hone, never having honed an SS razor, cos Im chicken, im definately no authority on it.

At the end of the day if you like it , thats the main thing, cos youre using it. And that goes for any razor but the members here will definately steer you in the right direction, so keep the faith in str8s and you will love them.

Well, Simon, that's very well said.

I have read that SS razors are more difficult to hone. At this point, however, this is a non-issue since I would outsource this to the professionals.

I do care about the price. This brings me to ask. Is there much difference betwwen the Henckels Friodur at the shaving shop and the Friodur at vintageblades?

To me, they both seem to have the same composition, with the razor at vintageblades having a different spine. Otherwise, is there a reason that creates the price difference? If not, I am leaning towards the razor at shavingshop (even though I'd prefer to do business with Jim at vintageblades).

I bought one from ShavingShop 3 weeks ago, and I just ordered one from Vintage, so I'll be able to compare!
