Thanked: 2Third Pin in the scales.
I'm trying to learn more about razors with the third stabilizing pin. I saw somewhere that it had a specific name, but I can't find it now. Yes, I've searched for "Third Pin" and Three Pins" on the forum.
Are some brands or models known for having the third pin?

Not as near as I can tell. Some old ones do, some new ones do.
I think that the higher quality razors have third pins, but I'm sure thats only sometimes the case.

One term that gets used for a third pin is "tang-stopper." Sometimes it's helpful to have a third pin so the blade doesn't swing through and out the other side of the scales. This is mainly an issue when the tang is really thick and the spacer is too wide.
I've read that companies used to put the third pin into their high-end models, but I honestly haven't seen a pattern in the several hundred razors I've handled.
Some of the custom makers use a third pin because it makes the handle feel more solid and simplifies some aspects of designing the scales. I find two-pin models more challenging to get right, so that's what I'm working on right now.

I read somewhere that the centre pin (or tang stopper) is intended as just that - a positive stop to blade rotation before the sides of the blade come to rest on the scales as they tend to do on two-pinners. I guess this would prevent the erosion (over time) of any gold-wash etc or it was just to stop a mirror-polished blade being scuffed and dulled by the scales. Makes sense to me!

I'll put a third pin in also if the scales are too flimsy. I'll also put them in my customs too protect the finish on the blade or it is just aesthetically pleasing to me.
