    Default nickel plating?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before:

Could you nickel plate a carbon steel blade for better corrosion protection?

Of course the bevel and the honing portion of the spine would be exposed steel, but why can't the rest of it be nickel plated?

    Just wondering...

I understand that Gary, aka Traveller, does some nickel plating around the pivot area to prevent rust. You may want to check with him.

I don't see any reason at all. Blades have been blued and some have gold wash. You could plate with anything. Just that when you hone you would have to protect the spine to keep the plate from coming off. The only possible issue I see depending on the plating process, you couldn't use IP Plate or PVD since that uses high heat.

You could most definatly Nickel plate to minamize corosion, though the issue u should be worrying about is the proccess, to nickel plate u need to use an electoplating device, ultra high voltage and the cemical u sumbmerge the blades in is some seriously toxic waste, so i dont suggest doing it at home, if possible get it profesionaly done, unless u know ur chemistry and have the proper knowledge to do it safely i advise against.

I don't know that you could not do it but I don't really see the point you would need to stop the plate down far enough yo give you enough edge to hone for the life of the razor and then corrosion doesn't cause as much of an issue on the spine as at the edge which is not protected anyway.

If you can find a local chrome shop.... Our local one was the site of a EPA superfund cleanup for a few months due to the nasty chemicals with which they had been playing fast and loose with....

Needless to say, that shop is gone now (as is virtually all of the facility that once stood on the property).
