That is a beautiful razor, I think the scales would look awesome with holes..

I do not know how anybody else measure the balance point of a razor but i like to have them open as straight as possible and then i place it, spine down, on piece of corner molding i find i like them best when the balance point is between 3/4" and 1" from the pivot (towards the toe). that is my preference... not sure what anybody else thinks.

    nice razor by the way

Guys say different things about where the balance point should be. It never really is a big concern for me when I'm making scales though. If you are trying to really nail it down though you can do as Jim said or just use a finger and try to have it balance anywhere from the pivot to the tang where you generally hold the razor while shaving. Where exactly is personal preference I think.

well i just guess i ll have to se how it feels when it gets a little closer to finished. i think the look will be much cleaner if i dont add holes to this one. adding the holes might make it blade heavy too so we will see.
    any more feed back welcome

I think the main thing is to make sure that when it's fully open that the balance point is somewhere in the vicinity of the pivot pin. Too heavy scales are more annoying than too light IMO, but even then it's not a huge deal.

I would think that you would want the "balance point" to be at the thumb position with the scales in a position where you could actually use the razor to shave your face. Having the scales wide open as shown is not really usable.

If the razor balances at the thumb, then you can easily adjust tip and tilt with a little pressure on either the tail or the spine.

    Nice looking blade!

I like the balance point just forward of the pivot towards the blade end. Small differences are really no big deal and a blade heavy razor isn't that big a deal either however, a scale heavy razor especially where there is a big difference is a big deal to me because in that case I find when you are shaving the scales tend to cause the razor to want to torque away from you.
