    Default Razor Care

I looked through the forums and did a search but couldn't find much information.

What is the recommended equipment for the care of a carbon steel blade, feel free to recommend favored brands
This is the one I got
    http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...940/873593.htm

So far I have a 3" Dovo strop and some Tuf-Glide for rust prevention, then I have a jar of alcohol to dip the razor in the sterilize and displace any water.

I'd like to eventually learn to sharpen a razor but I've got a long way to go I tried on a Dovo Pearlex SS and couldn't do it, so I sent it to Lynn to make sure it gets done right.

I think doc mentioned "Clippersol" in some previous thread as it being what he used on his razors. I also asked my barber on my last visit, and he mentioned something else had replaced "Clippersol". So I went down to the local "Sally Beauty Supply" store (we have them in spades here in the South!) and asked about what could be used. I was shown "Cool Care Plus."

Granted, this stuff is really made for clippers, but what it does sounds good:

    # Five-in-One formula is a coolant, disinfectant, lubricant, cleaner, and rust preventative
    ...
    # The disinfectant is a virucide, fungicide, batericide and tuberculocide

You don't need the coolant, but the rest sound ok... I purchased one can, and have been using it since. After I rinse my razor with warm water, I'll pat it dry with my towel (including the scales) and then I'll hold the razor over the sink as I spray both sides. It takes a bit to dry - but I leave the razor on my mug for that. In about five minutes I take the razor and put it back in the display case (that's for another story!) I wouldn't say that they razor is display pretty, but the stuff washes off by simply rinsing in warm water.

I like RIG ( rust inhibiting grease) I put a dab on a Hoppe's Silicon Gun Cleaning cloth and rub it in. Then I wipe guns, razors, knife blades. I've been using it for years down in high humidity, salt air coastal Florida and it has never let me down. Here is one source for it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Being something of a minimalist, I dry the blade with a towel, then give it a few licks on the strop. That seems to leave the razor dry enough, at least I have never had any problems.

Ok, thanks, I figured I had the basic stuff I needed, but just wanted to make sure.

You're good to go with just the tuf-glide. It displaces water and leaves a microscopic (dry) protective coating. The alcohol is just for sterilization purposes if you feel the need for such.

One more question. What should I use as a protectant for the wood or is it already sealed? I don't know anything about redwood so I don't know what it should look or feel like if it's sealed.

Nevermind, just read the description and saw that it's sealed
