Before I found this forum, or ever picked up a straight razor, I managed to find an excellent article on the Internet by Dr. Christopher Moss titled "The Art of the Straight Razor Shave."

It really helped me to understand what I needed to do to prepare to use a straight razor, and helped me to figure out what I should and should not expect to happen when I first started. I consider it an excellent step-by-step primer. It also pointed me to this forum, and the nice people here!!

That article is contained in an Adobe .pdf file, and can be found in the old library of this site by clicking these words then selecting the article of that title at the bottom of the list on that page.

You should read the entire article, but you can concentrate on chapters 4 and 6.

Don't get too frustrated with yourself. Most of us here didn't have the benefit of learning by watching our fathers shave, and this skill is probably best learned by 'hands-on" teaching. Nevertheless, I am very grateful that this forum is here where very experienced people will share what they have learned!

    Hope this helps.

are you speaking of the "Hanging Hair Test", or of hair on your head?

If you are speaking of getting a "Haircut" with a razor you can VERY CAREFULLY lay the razor across a comb at the desired hair length and pull both comb and razor through hair.

please note, there are tools specifically made for this with safety guards to keep you from cutting yourself. While i would feel semicomfortable using this technique on someone else where i could see everything, I would not use it on my own hair as it would be easy to slip, and lacerations to the scalp bleed like a mother......

if you are speaking of getting the razor to pass the hht (hanging hair test) you will have to speak to those more knowledgeable than me
