There are of course other important units and conversions between the two systems
0 byte = no
1 byte = yes
1 kilobyte = 1/360 of a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk
1 megabyte = 1/1.024 of level 1 cache of a middle of the road processor
1 gigabyte = the point where the disk drive manufacturers have fully completed the conversion from engineering to the more profitable scientific units
1 terabyte = the disk storage that $200 buys you in 2008
1 millibyte (aka minibyte) = 1/50 tapas dinner
1 microbyte = 1/12 of a sushi dinner
And of course using ones's fingers to count predates the times when centurion was a decently paid position, so you are completely correct that
1 centimeter = 1/100 of 1 meter (and the same certainly applies to any other unit such as liter or even litre).
One must understand though that using the correct units is very important. Even the weak federal government of USA has enough willpower to enforce the metric system in all matters of importance to said government. No, I am not talking about spacecraft, I'm talking about what amounts to the core purpose of the government - collecting money. Of course, they would most graciously accept quarters (since the population seems to be hung up on that), but make no mistake, the fundamental dimes and cents are the cornerstone of every tax. Just try using a dozen-based arithmetic on your tax forms and see what happens.....

To basically resume:
1 inch = around 2.54 cm
so
1/8" = 1 inch / 8 = ((2.54 / 8) x 1) = 0.3175 cm
2/8" = (1 inch / 8) x 2 = ((2.54 / 8) x 2) = 0.635 cm
3/8" = (1 inch / 8) x 3 = ((2.54 / 8) x 3) = 0.9525 cm
4/8" = (1 inch / 8) x 4 = ((2.54 / 8) x 4) = 1.27 cm
5/8" = (1 inch / 8) x 5 = ((2.54 / 8) x 5) = 1.5875 cm
6/8" = (1 inch / 8) x 6 = ((2.54 / 8) x 6) = 1.905 cm
7/8" = (1 inch / 8) x 7 = ((2.54 / 8) x 7) = 2.2225 cm
8/8" = to make it short 2.54 cm ;o)
then for the x/16" and x/32", it's pretty the same logic...Last edited by Karakoup1; 07-23-2008 at 12:31 AM.
