Thanks So many beautiful razors out there it was hard to decide between them. My first razor is a Dovo 5/8 carbon steel rounded point full hollow with buffalo horn scales. I wanted to try a bigger blade to see how that feels with my heavier beard. I went with the mammoth ivory scales because I love animal horns - probably because my father has been a long time big game hunter.

First shave with the Henckels - not quite as smooth as I would have expected.

I opted for the $20 expert honed option on this one because I was afraid I might screw up such a nice razor. To my surprise, I found that my Dovo actually shaves a bit smoother. First pass was pretty tough, but I found also that I had to adjust my technique a bit and the shaving began to go a bit better. Sure have to be mindful of that sharp Spanish point!

On the positive side, I just love the heft and size of this razor and it sure is pretty.

All in all a decent shaver, but maybe my beard actually likes the carbon steel more than stainless? Should that make any difference at all?

Anyone here have experience with the Henckels Friodors and thoughts on how they perform as shavers?

I got one off here, and it's a fantastic shaver. I've seen some threads that say Friodur's will shave better if they have a certain number of layers of tape on the spine, and others (including the member who sold me mine; I don't remember his nick) say that they really like ChromeOx.

I'm assuming mine was finished on ChromeOx, and since it's a relatively easy experiment, I'd suggest you try it. Since your Dovo is also shave ready and ChromeOx is a great way to keep a sharp razor sharp as well as finishing non-shave ready razors, I'd say it might be good to have in general.

So you got it! It looks great! I finished your dovo with the chrom ox and that may account for the difference, either that or im just awesome haha. Hows the edge on the dovo holding up?

The Dovo is still shaving great TJ. I took the Henckels to the Norton 4000/8000 myself this weekend and got it shaving pretty decently. Time to invest in a second strop for chrome ox though to get that final sharpening.

CrO is really good for final polishing but you may want to think about investing in a yellow coticule to give a nice polish that is one step up from the Norton 8K.

I've got the same razor (with plastic scales) in the 7/8 size. I paid to have it honed before it was shipped but I don't think it ever got to shave ready. It was sharp, but not shave ready. I'm now waiting for it to return from someone else. Should be here today or Monday.

Can't wait to get the black plastic scales off of it.

Edit: On yours, is the tip of the spine perpindicular to the scales? Mine is actually at an angle. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I like it. It looks like yours is not the same way.
