Default Olive oil and baking soda?

I've been using Ballistol (came with my LeGrelot from Rasurpur) as my razor protective layer. Seems to work just fine.

However it smells like a litterbox of a cat with digestive problems, and thus SWMBO has raised a bit of a fuss about the odor.

So, I had seen that some folks use olive oil as a protective oil. that sounds good to me, we have plenty of olive oil on hand in the house (SWMBO is of Greek descent), but I also have read that adding baking soda to water whilst honing will also help prevent corrosion.

So, would there be any detriment if I were to mix in some baking powder to the olive oil as a razor protection layer, or will there be issues with prolonged exposure to the baking soda?

I've used baby oil on my razors and so far the only one that has developed any problems was the one I forgot to oill and left on the sink in the bath. (my Wapi, which gives me an excuse to have it re-scaled)

I don't see how adding baking soda to the oil would help. It would make it gritty though. Many people use baby oil or camelia oil . Both work well without any additives. Pretty much any oil that won't go rancid will work.

Forgot to mention, if you don't want your razors smelling like a newborn, mineral oil will work the same, without the scent.

    Default Crisco works for me

For long time storage "a month or more" I have been using a very light coat of Crisco. It doesn't run like olive oil, and a light protective coat is almost invisible. What ever you do, don't wipe lard on your razors. I knew a guy who did and a month later his razors lost an inch in length. Too bad he didn't know that lard is shortning.

Bad jokes aside (OK, that was actually pretty good...) What do you use for short term storage?

In my estimation: The quote "wherever you go, there you are" is from Buckaroo Banzai from 1984.
