Thanked: 0Silica Gel crystals to keep your razor dry
Hey i had a thought, my dad uses hearing aids and i remember when growing up we'd always save the dry crystals you get in food packaging or electronics and then give them to him. He's store his hearing aids in them and when they were saturated he'd dry them out in the oven and use again. So i just wondered then if it would be possible to perhaps store your razor in with these crystals (in packet form or perhaps as loose crystals). Has anyone tried this? perhaps a bit of overkill, i keep my razor out of the bathroom and have never gotten any rust on it. Perhaps if you were travelling to the tropics it might be best to pack some crystals in with your razor box.

For the tropics I would opt for SS razor rather than having to grill silica gel crystals all the time.

It certainly couldn't hurt. The silica packets at least. As soon as I put together my razor box I'm planning on throwing a few silica packets in there.

I've also thought of making a razor box with a compartment for silica gel packets, though I haven't tried it yet. I'll be interested in hearing how it worked out if anyone has done it.

You could get a humidor that is designed to hold humidity crystals and replace them with silica (usless you'd rather build your own, that is).

Abouot 15 yrs ago I purchased a bunch of large silicone crystal sacks about the size of a pack of cigarettes at a gun show. I use them in my safe w/ hand guns and in my machinists tool boxes loaded w/ precision measuring instriments. None of my guns or tools have developed any rust. I haven't used the machinist tools for over 15 years, since I changed careers but went into the boxes a few months ago and all is dry and rust free. A short while after I started collecting str8s I put up a wall mounted cabinet w/ glass sides and doors to store/show my str8s. The first thing I did was confiscate s couple of the silicone sacks and put them in the cabinet w/ the str8s. All seems well.

I keep my razors in a drawer that is not in the bathroom and I have a couple of those silica packages in the drawer as well. I've also started wiping my razors with a small amount of mineral oil after shaving.
