Thread: Length of the edge

Hi!

Is there any "standard" length for edges? Are there razors with an edge between 2 and 2.25 inches? Shorter?

What would be the length of the cutting edge on razors with the geometry of a Dovo Renaissance for example?

Seems to me, a shorter edge would be more maneuverable.

True, but big blades just look so much more badass :-) I have a bunch of different old razors & they are radically different dimensions. There doesn't seem to be any standard (at least for old razors).

I believe most razors are about 2.5 to 3 inches, but there are some that are larger or smaller. They tend to be rarer, though. And of course, you can get a custom of any size, as long as someone is willing to make it.

Some features that generally make a razor more manuverable are round points, shoulderless grinds, extra hollow blades, and light scales. Thumb and finger notches can also give razors a "lighter" feel in the hand. I guess my point is that while the lenght of the blade does affect the manuverability of the blade, a number of other factors also contribute.

Usually around 3 inches. When you get used to one, you have to be careful when using a 3 1/2 inch spike point as they can really dig in if you're not careful.

The Dovo renaissance does have a rather short cutting edge, and is an awesome shaver! You can whip that thang around your face with wild abandon (OK, comparatively speaking...)

If you are thinking of getting one....DO! See my review in the review section...

I used to heve two Friodurs, one had a cutting edge 1/4 inch longer than the other, and I always had a harder time with that one due to that fact.

Yes, it is!

I have really come to prefer Japanese style straight razors for their smaller blade and minimalist styling, check 'em out if your interested in shorter blades.

Im looking forward to trying out Japanese style razors too!

I like them too; more and more as my honing on them improves and get used to proper right handed, ura on the face handling technique.

I am also a big fan of the "midget" or "travel" size as well. (Full length straights are great too.)
