Two "new" straights
Hi all!
The two straights I won at a bidding site just arrived!
I payed about 4 $ for each one!=)
One is a swedish razor marked" D.W Dahlgren Eskilstuna Sweden".
The other is a german razor marked "Respect Trademark" on one side and "Germany" on the other.
I'm a noob on straights so could you guys tell me if i did a good buy and give me some tips on how to get them shavable.
I'm going to order a Norton 4k/8k stone an practise honing with these razors, trying to get them shave ready, and polish them up.Sometime in the future I might rescale them, the swedish razor is kind of "floppy" in the pivot pin.
Do you have any tips on getting them shave ready?I have wetsanding paper from 400 grit to 1200 grit and I'm going to order the Norton, will I be fine with that?
Pics
1.The two razors and a box that came with them,I'm unsure if the box belongs to any of the razors. Is there a bit of a smiling edge on the swedish?
2.The german razor, has an etching on the blade saying "Diamond Steel",on the scale is the name J.Sjödin etched, probably an old owner,I'm a bit confued about the plastic on the tang,is that common? This razor i pretty sharp and should'nt be to hard to get shave ready. It shaves my arm but it pulls a bit,the swedish one does'n even shave armhair..
3.The box that came with the razors.
4.The german razor, what kind of grind is this?(do you say grind?)
5.The swedish razor.Wedge?

They are both very nice razors. You might consider learning to hone on a blade of lesser quality. They both should make fine shavers. Nice buy!
If I could respectfully make a suggestion: consider purchasing a set of Shapton Glass hones.I wouldn't think that either blade would require the very coarse grits you mentioned. I have been able to set the bevel on many blunted blades with my 3K Shapton glass hone. After that, a brief pyramid progression from 6K-8K-16K created beautiful results.
A 4/8 Norton would-with some patience also serve your needs.

Thanked: 174Great looking razors.
I would second the advice about practicing on a cheap razor first as what you have purchased look to be of a high quality , in good almost unused condition. It's not that you will ruin the razors, it just you will do so much better after a little practice. Incidentally vintage razors in the condition that you have found are getting harder and harder to find, so look after them. You have to pay a lot of money for a modern equivalent, if you can get one that has been assembled and sharpened properly.

Oooo, that last near wedge shot is lovely (as is the other). Would echo the advice of practicing on another razor, in fact, I'd say, send them out to someone who already knows what they're doing so as to see what they can be like. From your pictures, I'd guess very impressive.

I think I'm going to listen to your advise and have the razors honed by a professional honer..
