Default Solingen "Gong Razor" wald 2633?

    Hi!
This weekend I found a solingen blade in a antiquestore. I paid like 9 bucks for it and it says Gong razor on one side and wald 2633 on the other side.

Anyone know anything about this blade? I will take pictures of it when I sharpen it and restored the blade as good as possible.

I have quite a few old Gong razors, though there doesn't seem to be much in the way of info on the company. All have been excellent blades.

Default I snapped a few photos now. :)

Took some time to clean this blade up. Not sure how to get it even better, maby some sandpaper.
Anyway I gave it a go on my norton 4-8K and that might have done the trick, I think however I did not get it as good as I could. But I will go at it again tomorrow. I dont have any other stone to sharpen my blades at. But this blade was not that bad condition to start with.

The scale is messed up though, its bended in some wieard way. And have nothing special to it, it works though, for now.

What do you guys think? Did I make a good buy?

hoglahoo: Sorry that you did not find any porn here.

I would love to know more what year this might be from and any other information you razorgurus might have for me.

Ok had my first shave with this today. Still might need some more honing to be perfect. But it sure has potential! Will work it over a few more times with my norton, sucks I dont have a 1000 grid but thats life.

Seems to be real good quality steel.

The maker was Carl Friedrich Ern, probably better known for the 'Crown & Sword' razors. The company was founded in 1873 and registered in 1874. It is listed as being at Solingen-Wald in 1922 (although they had located their many years before) and at Kanalstrasse 43 in 1939. They had a multitude of brands, including the Raccoon, the Roosevelt, the Es-Ex, the Wee Mcgregor to name but a few.

Carl Friedrich Ern was born in 1850 and died in 1924. His family were razor-grinders (the Wupper grinders, after Wuppertal), and he took over his fathers company - they honed razors for other firms (in 1860 Nathaniel Ern only ground and honed razors for Henckels), but soon began to make their own razors. Nathaniel taught his son Carl to do the job - at that time there were 20 workers and seven masters. Singing and talking were forbidden, drinking never allowed. The company moved to Wald (to Wittekulle), an outlying district of Solingen, in 1876. In 1893 they introduced the 'Hexe' machine to hollow-grind razors, said to be a benefit to all razor makers.

Above: the 'Hexe' (translates as 'witch') hollow grinding machine
