I'll bet it could be made, but as you mentioned, the weight would be a huge issue. I don't think it would be practical to shave with all that weight in the scales. Plus, the blade touching/rubbing on the scales would scratch it (I'm thinking of the tang and the bits just below the spine that rest on the scales).

if you want that marble look go with the plastic stuff they use for counter tops corian it looks good and is lighter and more forgiving.

I am positive I could do it from Recon stone at least. I have some Jade recon that is good for a straight scale set in terms of size and all, just haven't made them yet. Whether they would be reasonable as functional scales has yet to be seen. I'm not too interested in the idea personally but might try it eventually.

The only limiting factor I can see is the flex.... the scales flex as the razor opens and closes...... I can't see marble etc: flexing but I would bet, I could overcome that with a flexible wedge..... just so long as something can flex, it should in theory, work !!!!!

With the right gear you could grind down the material to a point where it would not be too heavy and yet retain enough strength so it would not break due to lack of flex. The problem is the investment in the gear and when I say it wouldn't be too heavy I mean for a substantial blade like 7/8s and larger. For a 5/8s or even a 6/8s unless it was a heavy wedge it would be too heavy. It no fun shaving with a scale heavy razor.

On the flex problem, Dovo En Vogue razors have micarta scales that have practically nil flex in them - they get round that by using a parallel-sided spacer and internal brass washers at the pivot - and the fact that the tang sides are dead flat helps too!

Any micarta I have used (G10, canvas, linen, Carbon Fiber, etc.) has all had at least some flex. Regardless of what Dovo does I believe from experience that flat spacers can create problems down the line. Then again Micarta isn't prone to warping so the risk is less. I think stone could be used any way you want to do it.

I've been thinking about stone scales for a while now and have finally ordered some diamond twist drills as I have had no success at all with diamond burrs, however I have been trying to drill through agate ,I don't know how that compares with the hardness of marble ,but its bloody hard. I will give it another go when they arrive the problem I`m having is the smallest diamond hole saw is 3mm and you have to get down to 1.1mm or 1/16" I just had a thought , drill it 3mm and turn up a sleeve for the holes then make large custom washer to cover the lot so the sleeve cant be seen , I may give that a go if the diamond twist drills don't work
    Kind regards Peter
