Default Hello. Will Someone Please Explain Sizes?

Hi. This is my first post on the razor forum! I recently purchased a vintage straight razor at an estate sale with the intention of reselling it. In order to write up a description that would provide important information to someone buying a razor (and at least use correct terminology), I researched on line. I thought I had done a pretty thorough job and hit all the important parts until I looked at some of the postings today and saw people talking about 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8. I'm sure that designates some kind of size. Would someone please describe to me what it means and how I would determine which my razor is? Thank you in advance!

Well, no wonder I didn't recognize it, I had my blade listed as 11/16! lol. I've changed that to read 5/8". Thank you very much for helping me.

Actually, blades are usually measure in 1/8" units, but we use 1/16" units if the blade is closer to that.
So it is perfectly normal to see razors advertised as 11/16 or 15/16, though this is not normally done in retail.

Especially in bigger widths this becomes important, because big blades are pretty rare.
So if I bought a 8/8 blade and then it is only 15/16+ I'd be miffed.

The advertised size should always be rounded down, not up, and to a 1/16 unit precision.
Otoh I have a 7/8 that is less than 1/64 under 7/8, but there I don't mind because thanks to the empiricial system (the 1800s called...) it is hard to express such accurate measurements. So while it is technically a 55/64, that number is meaningless to me and many others. Most of the world actually...

Bruno -- Thanks for the info. Very informative. So I could have left my listing as 11/16ths. Hopefully no one will be upset if they get it and it is a scosh bigger!

Bigger by 1/16 is not an issue that someone is going to make problems of in my experience.
Smaller by 1/16 would be a problem.
