Thanked: 2Suggestions Steel for Livi Razor?
I'm looking to have a Maestro Livi razor created for me and I was interested in getting some suggestions on the available steels. I had my eye on the Takeda and Silvano steel but I don't know much about either. Maybe even the ATS34. Any advice? I know there are plenty of Livi owners out there.
Cheers
Michael

I have none of the above.
But if I had the budget, I'd buy the Takeda steel. Personal preference.
ATS34 is stainless, just in case you didn't know. Some people love stainless, others don't, and the rest doesn't care either way.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

That Silvano is mighty nice. I got a 7/8 from Straight Razor Designs that shaves like a dream. They have one on their website now.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have a Livi Takeda and a Livi Silvano and both are exceptional shavers. They take and hold a superb edge and are truly beautiful to look at. Both provide a super smooth and comfortable shave. I think I like the Silvano a bit better, but would be hard pressed to explain why.
In my opinion, the most basic of the Livi regrinds far exceed any objective measure of what constitutes a great razor. The custom Livis are even better, plus they give you the satisfaction of owning and using a truly unique handcrafted item. So, given that part of the appeal of these razors is somewhat subjective, I am most drawn to the ones with the greatest eye appeal and that difficult to define "cool" factor. That means that I would recommend the Takeda or Silvano over the standard Damascus and the Damascus over the ATS 34. As always, YMMV.
It's a great dilemna to have isn't it?

The Rose Damascus that Mastro Livi does is actually a combination of ATS34 and 440 steels folded. The lighter bands are ATS34 and the darker bands are 440. I have to say it makes for a superb sahve and the edge seems to keep forever!

I got a big kick out of the DVD watching the Mastro forge and shape the blade. The guy is amazing.
