Thread: razor irritation...advice needed

Does anyone have any ideas why a particular razor of mine has a tendency to cause irritation (specifically on my neck)?? I stopped shaving ATG with this razor. Even so, with a 2 pass WTG shave, I still have this problem...

None of my other razors will regularly do so.
The razor passes the general sharpness tests. Shaves very well.
Ive checked to make sure the razor is level.
No visible chips/nicks.
No rust or debris on the razor.

Should I clean it with something in particular?

There are usually two reasons why a shaver is uncomfortable. Either it needs to be honed or your technique needs the honing. Usually if the razor needs honing it will shave uncomfortably on several areas of the face. I know for me the chin has the toughest hair so if it shaves good there the razor is good. You might check your angle with the razor on your neck.

If you're sure "thebigspender" hasn't nailed it I have found that some of my razors feel harsher than others, generlly I think German steel feels sharper, while Sheffield steel is silkier and American steeel is somwhere in the middle.

maybe this razor would benefit from some chromium oxide polishing to make the shave smoother on a pasted strop or balsa

You could also try lightening up on the pressure you use in the shave.

To quote the great GSSIXGUN, "Strop the crap out of it." I stropped an irritating blade for 30 mins. straight. It shaved quite smoothly afterward. This, of course, assumes the blade is sharp and that the irritation isn't being caused by a dull blade.
