Appraisal of antique razor
I had a visit to an antique store this weekend, and asket the owner if he had any straightrazors. His shop was a total mess, and after a few minutes he dug out 5 or 6 razors. He tried to sell them as Ivory handels, but upon closer inspection only one of the razors had real ivory.I told him this, and it was obvious that he didn't know anything about razors. Most of the razors was just rusty junk, but the one with real ivory was actually in remarcable good condition. It was a little rust on the tang, and some small pitting on the blade, but appart from that it looket great.I cannot remember the name of producerBut it was marked with "Sheffield" It was a 6/8 blade very wade and Butcher looking. The handles was very special, wide, with lots of patterns and different carvings.I'm 100% sure its real ivory.
I asked him what he wanted for it, and he told me about 130 dollars.Do you think that is to much?
I know this is difficult, but just imagine a really sweet looking old razor with unique ivory handels....
I told him that I had to think about it...But I'm getting a feeling of uncontrolable hunger

If you are one hundred percent sure and there is no doubt at all that it is figural ivory (how did you test it?). It might be worth that price. But then again I'm cheap.

First of all, it was half the thicknes of the celluloid handles, you could also see the sawmarks on the inside of the handles. You could also see the grain lines. And finally it had that yellowing glow.I didn't do any further tests, such as the hot needle. But I'm as sure as can be.

Good. Sounds like its pretty good then. The scales are probably worth the asking price. Hopefully someone with some ivory experience can chime in with how easy it will be to safely remove the so the blade can be restored. Now matter how nice they look it would suck big time to crack them in blade removal or re-pinning.

Actually I don't think it will be neceserry to remove the handles. The blade was in very good shape, and quite sharp, save a tiny rust spot on the tang, plus some minor pitting.I'll post some pictures if(when) I get it.

If you are SURE the scales are carved ivory - buy it. If you don't want it, I'll buy it.
