My Dad's Razor
My Dad recently gifted me with his old str8. I knew he had one, and asked about it - I didn't have any knowledge what it actually was since I haven't seen it in many years.
Turns out it's an old Dovo - probably a nice one. However, it's got a hairline fracture about 1/4" back from the tip, from the blade edge to nearly the spine. Is this something a honemeister can restore to shave-ready status so I can explore the wonders of this hobby?
Assuming I figured out how to attach images, the top one is an overall view, the second has a wavy yellow line pointing at the hairline crack, in approximate shape of the crack, and the third is a darker image that shows the crack more clearly.Last edited by Thumper; 12-02-2008 at 07:14 PM. If that last image is the extent of the crack, I'm really sorry but I reckon the blade is scrap. It may be possible to get an edge on it but there would come a time when you put it up to shave and a chunk will snap clean out causing god knows what damage.
My advice would be - tresure it as your dad's razor, put it in a display case - and buy a new one. Sorry!

Darn the crack, what a nice razor. Maybe there is a solution - I don't have one for you but just want to comment on how nice it is to have a straight like that from your father!

Does the crack go all the way through to the other side? If it does, well, like the others have said, treasure the razor in a display case, but you'll have to get another.
I've never seen a crack run that way before though...

you can shorten the blade quite a bit and get rid of the crack that way. however the goldwash will look funky being so off center.
and seeing as it was your father's, i would treasure it. buy a vintage and pretend it was your father's.

Thanked: 735As said by others..that razor is pretty much toast.
However, there are new Dovo's available with pretty much that exact same INOX stainless steel blade.

Yes, the crack is visible (barely) on the other side. It runs from the blade edge to about midway across the blade towards the spine.
