    Default Whats a starter razor?

New guy here and have a question on what I noticed some folks talking about a good starter razor.
    I have a few straights -
Boker red injun -(that I got off e-bay with a chip in the blade.Used the bread cutting tech. to take chip out! WHEW!!!!! Took me forever to hone the edge on a stone then a spydeco hone then a strop to get it to pass the HHT)
    DOVO 6/8 bought brand new.
Both blades give a good shave (Getting better shaves as I work on my shaving skills)
What I want to know is what's considered a starter razor?
And is there better razors than the Boker and Dovo's?

some say the round point is best as they aren't as dangerous as far as jabbing yourself. i think the biggest thing for a starter (and any razor for that matter) is that it is honed by a pro so you know what a truly sharp razor feels like. other then that i think any good brand name is good. it is more about how it is sharpened and how you treat it i guess.

a big recommendation i can give to noobs (i know i am still pretty new ha!) is to have more then one razor if possible so you can compare the edge to something. if you only have one and it gradually gets dull it is hard to notice without something to compare to.

    Thanks for the reply.
That was the reason I bought the Dovo new so I could compare it to the Boker I got from e-bay

yes, i do have better razors than your dovo, and since your boker shaves the same, better than that one too by transitivity
it's likely though that the boker can be honed to shave better and probably can be restored to look better.

if i was getting someone into str8 shaving, a starter razor is one that shaves well and i won't feel bad giving it away and never getting it back. if i had 80 W&B and did not mind giving one up, that would be a starter. i have given 4/8-6/8 and never had anyone come back and say it was too small or large. 'starter razor' can be interpreted many ways.

better than boker and dovos? there has to be right, or wrong? some will say their dovos are the cat's meow. i have a red injun that just rocks. are there better. absolutely. well, to me anyway. i don't have a dovo so i do not know. my bokers are great shavers. but so are many others.

2 great questions, but 2 that will give you very subjective answers. ultimately, if they shave you and you are pleased, you have a great starter razor.

    good luck.

IMO a starter razor would be any easily affordable razor in good shape and shave ready that you would be able to learn shaving, stropping with and if something goes terribly awry(faucet ding etc) you would not be out of a lot of money. A 50$ blade from SRP classifieds vs a Livi.

Hey Willy, I picked up a DOVO at vintage blades witch was honed buy the master Lynn. It came very shave ready & now I have something to compare it too. I'm going to follow the advice of others & buy a second razor "twist my arm" & you bet im going got another from vintage blade that has ben pre honed. You can get a nice blade for $80 to $100. Good-luck
