Thanked: 0Le Grelot Razor
Thank you for your input. So out of all the razors out there for the $300 dollar range i have heard that the Le Grelot is the best. And that the 1/4 is the best of the Le Grelot family. I personally shave with a 5/8 rounded 3/4 grind j.a. henckels and a 6/8 rounded 3/4 grind Solingen razor. What are your recommendations?

I guess Martin at Rasurpur is the only one selling the 1/4 grind now; you can find the 3/4 to full hollow at Classicshaving too.
If you really want the 1/4 grind why not ordering from rasurpur? Martin is a very nice guy and it is a pleasure to make business with him - I bought my Le Grelot 1/4 from him and it was a very smooth transaction (expect for my wallet of course).

Thanked: 6I have 3 razors, quarter-hollow Le Grelots, which I bought from Martin. I can confirm the experience of the previous posters. They all came expertly honed, too. Unfortunately, I think that he no longer has these with the cheaper plastic handles, only fancy ones!
Highly recommended, though…

I recently bought one of the 6/8 , 3/4 ground variety from Edwin Jagger-The English Shaving co.-this was before Classic was handling them.
It arrived within 7 days from the UK. It came in a handsome leather pouch. Unfortunately, although allegedly honed-the edge had a chip that had to be honed out.
IF YOU BUY ONE- and you are not VERY EXPERIENCED with honing, make SURE you get if pre-sharpened. The steel is reportedly a "double purified" carbon steel-but it BRUTALLY hard and extremely difficult to hone.
It was only $87 shipped from Sheffield, England.Although, Thiers-Issard, has been reported to have had QC issues-the blade on mine and overall fit and finish is outstanding. If you are looking for a HONING CHALLENGE-I can assure you if you buy this razor WITHOUT their pre-sharpening option- you have FOUND IT.

I have both a 1/4 grind and the 3/4 to full Le Grelots. They are both difficult to hone but yield a great edge when finished. The Jagger is the best offer available for a NOS Grelot at this time. The shave is as a close as the 1/4 but the feeling is different with the 1/4 being a more comfortable shave. My 1/4 is the B&B LTD. Used B&B LTD occasionally are offered on the B&B member sale site.
IMHO, there is no best razor rather different shaving experiences. For this reason, you buy as many razors as you can afford!

I took my chance and purchased a Le Grelot from eBay for 10 Euros.
I removed the scales, ordered some custom ebony wood scales, sanded, polished and honed the blade, and "voilá", I have a almost new Le Grelot that shaves like a charm. I Love it with a capital L.

I own a matched pair of Le Grelot quarter hollow razors. I admit to a heaver grind preference, but these razors are some of the best shavers I own. As pointed out, they can be difficult to hone.

I just got my razor from Edwin Jagger and came honed and stropped and delivered for $101.00 So far it is the closest, best shave I have ever had! I ordered another one as classicshaving is double the price (better scales). I thought I was getting a good shave...and now wow! I think the heft of the 6/8 works for me much better than 5/8 too! Grab one of these while you can. I like it much better than my Dovos of TI's.

Thanked: 0Having had quite a bit of practice restoring over twenty ebay razors I have come to a bit of an understanding as to how hard it actually is to hone right. Although I am still not good but I would like the wedge challenge. Thank you for your input on the Le Grelots. I think that for sure I am going with the heavy 1/4 grind and then I will look into getting it in the more hollow grind later.
