Thread: sanitation.

i suppose i myself can be a bit o.c.d.

i have a couple razors that are used, previously of course not by myself, and i was wondering of a good method to be sure they are sanitized. i've read on here about boiling, barbicide, etc...

help much appreciated.

When I get old razors , which is frequently, I don't do much to them unless they are really grungy. I might hit them with Semi Chrome or Flitz and if the scales are funky on the inside Scrubbing Bubbles. About all of the germs you would have to worry about will be dead and gone if the razor hasn't been used in months or years. IMHO.

There's a lot of info on this that's been discussed previously -- try a search for 'barbicide' or 'disinfecting' or some such keyword.

Personally, I soak the blades in Barbicide when I first get them, but I doubt that's even necessary. Makes my gf much happier, though.

In addition to the already mentioned Barbicide, some people use alcohol or boil the blades but not the scales. I personally use an iodophor. Things to avoid are autoclaves, bleach and flaming.

Plain soap and water works for me, followed by a good drying. Bugs have a hard time surviving on a cold, dry steel surface.

after cleaning and honing, barbacide spraydown and aclcohol wipedown.

so i started by spraying with alcohol and letting set for a little over 10 minutes. then i placed in barbicide for 10 minutes. then i boiled water and set in in for a few 1-2 minute intervals. i then honed. about 50 laps. now i am soaking in barbicide again for 10 minutes.

i have to admit it's kind of fun. not the o.c.d. but the satisfaction of cleaning.

You can't be too careful I guess .

i should be good with what i've done, right? i mean, i understand viruses typically don't live too long anyway, and i have had the blade for at least three years if not a couple more. and i cleaned the heck out of it. barbicide, alcohol and boiling water.

i wouldn't really know what else to do.

then my wife goes and says, "i just don't want you to get a disease."

then she gets me thinking. then i clean it all over again.

You gotta be kidding me. Look up the other thread. There's a lot of information there regarding this. Also, three years?? Unless the thing has sat in a pile of sh*t for the last three years, I think you're going to be alright.
