The Balance?
I was asked once how a handle I put on a Japanese style razor affected the balance. I realized then I have no idea what you guys mean by the term.
What as-built features other than heavy metal scales could throw the balance off?
(i'm not very interested in heavy wear issues)
Is it based on how you hold when shaving?
What features make for good balance?

Plastic scales on a big wedge?
The usual case (wapi excepting) is that the scales are much lighter than the blade. especially with old blades. Getting a perfectly balanced blade is nigh on impossible with a big wedge unless you have a butt spacer of depleted uranium.
But as long as the balance is reasonable, I don't mind.
Overall, I don't think a perfect balance is that important. The most important thing imo is that the balance is weighted towards the blade and not towards the scales.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 21If a blade is balanced well, that means that the strongest part of your grip (forefinger/thumb) is on or near the center of mass. This allows for the blade to be held, and for the other fingers to provide subtle movement of the blade for fine work.
I have a razor with scales I made myself, and I ended up making them far too heavy (wedge end too fat) for the blade, so it feels awkward just to hone it.

I mentioned iwasaki just as a point of reference. I was asking in general, seeking thoughts on the inherent it depends_s. of balance
How do you quantify the difference between1. the balance is off. 2. the balance is merely different.
Japanese razors are generally(always) toe heavy. The vintage western blades I have all measure thickest at the toe spine.
I can't seem to identify any preference for a razor specific to balance
