Thanked: 953Pumas made by Dovo at some period?
I have a vague recollection of reading somewhere, probably here, that pumas of some era were made by Dovo [not that there's anything wrong with that]. Is that true, and if so, how can you tell if a puma is from that era? Is it certain model numbers?

I am not sure if one has anything to do with the other but towards the end of Puma's run I started to see photos in the Gutmann catalog of Puma Razors with no tang stamp and the rubber or plastic grooved sheath over the tang. More stainless as well. That is around the time that knife collectors, of which I was one, began to feel that Puma was going down hill. I don't know if that was valid for razors but the knives were not what they had been in past years.

I remember reading about pumas made by dovo, but I can't remember who made that remark.

Yea towards the end of Puma making straights they had Dovo making them. I once heard tell that on some of the Puma's they say made from best pumaster steel and others say made from best puma steel. One of those supposedly means its a Dovo but I don't remember which and I don't even know if its true but I have 3 Pumas and some say either so I don't know. I'm sure the stainless is a Dovo and mine says pumaster on it.

Yeah, I was watching this one, and was thinking the same thing. Still, I had expected it to sell for more.

This is interesting. I took a look at my Pumas. I have a High Class and a couple of others that are older that say Puma Steel and one that says Puma Stahl which is of course German for steel. I also have a couple of Puma Bresnick Ducks and two Puma Made With Kayser-Ellison Steel but that is another story.
What I find interesting is that the 1960s and early '70s Pums pocket knives were etched Pumamaster Steel on the blades. Around 73 or 74 they started etching them Super Keen Cutting Steel. I don't know when the razors started with the Pumamaster but it was later then that I think.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 953mine says puma steel, not pumaster steel. I thought that just meant it wasn't a black belt. and it says 81, which I'm hoping means it's old and not a dovo. then again, it's a good razor, so maybe I shouldn't sweat this.
