Question Size of DOVO replacement scales?

    Hey,

I'm relatively new to the forum, but I've been learning a lot and really appreciate the helpful nature of everyone on the boards.

My Joseph Allen non-XLL scales just reached the end of their days last night when a hairline crack decided it was time to grow into a full fledged break. I was eying the bone DOVO replacement scales over at classic shaving, but I'm not sure the Joseph Allen isn't too long for them.

Does anyone know if the blade would fit well? I've searched the forum, and emailed Classic Shaving but haven't found any info yet.

the blade is a 5/8 smiler and it's 4 3/4" from tip to pivot hole.

    Thanks,
    -tom

What is the size of the current scales in comparison to the replacement scales?

the current scales run 5" pin to pin and have a max width of 5/8" and run 5 3/4" in total length.

I don't have dovo scales to compare to which is why I asked.

It looks like they might work from eyeballing it, but I wanted to see if anyone could confirm. I don't want to have too little material behind the pivot pin.

    Thanks,
    -t

Straight Razor Maintenance & Repair Needs

    unfortunately not...

just that they fit 4-6/8 razors. I'm still hoping for an email response from them to clear this up. Or maybe if someone can measure other dovo scales and let me know the specs that would probably help.

I just pulled two bone handled DOVOs from the shelf the tape measure says they are 5 1/2 inches long from one end to the other.

The measurement that actually matters is the pivot hole to toe of the razor.....
On the scales from the pivot hole to the wedge...
Watch the advertising on the Dovo scales, it used to say you could drill yer own hole I have not found this to be the case.... (I have not used the bone scales )

    thanks again,

there is a difference of 1/8" between toe-pivot on a DOVO and toe-pivot on my Joseph Allen, the JA being the larger. There appears to be at least a 1/4" of room between the toe and the wedge on my friend's dovo, so I should make it by about 1/8th if it comes with both holes pre-drilled. If I can drill it then I'll have a little more play.

I'll post pics when it's done, but it might be a while.

Usually on the pre-fab scales that I have seen, they are made to accomodate pretty close to what either Dovo or TI sells. That typically translates to a 3-3 1/2 inch blade. I'm thinking it probably won't do. Ask the classic folks to measure from the pin hole to the spacer and then compare that against your pin hole to the end of the razor measurement.

If you need scales there are some good restoration folks here in the forum. Just let them know what kind of material you are interested in.

just one pic, others were washed out, this one has some odd shadows going on, but it's the best representation of the scales' color.

The blade just fit in the scales and looks and feels very good, honed it up and shaved w/ it last night. I had to epoxy the rather large pivot hole and drill a new one to get rid of some play. Otherwise the whole thing went very smoothly.

I was disappointed that the scales came with both holes pre-drilled and the wedge pin already assembled, but I lucked out that it fit, otherwise it would've found a different razor to call home.
