Only one straight razor that was going to be your daily for the next umpteen years, one that you would eventually pass down as an heirloom, which would it be and why?
I'm unable to answer that question.

Hmmmm. I think Mastro Livi " snake razor " with abalone scales.Why? Because it is the best looking razor I have ever seen! I bet it shaves like a dream to....:hmmm:
I recently honed a Herbert Wacker for a friend, OMG! It was sweet!
Does it have to be a razor that I currently own?
If I had to say right now, and if I was going to have one custom made, it would be a 6/8, half or quarter hollow, probably a Spanish point. Maybe some sort of work done on the back; jimps on the bottom of the tang might be nice. I don't know what blade material I would want, since I know very little about different types of steel. Scales would be black horn.
Sounds pretty generic (excpet maybe the point), but that's because I don't think I'd ever get tired of looking at a simple, beautiful blade. As far as the size/grind, that is simply what I find the easiest and smoothest to shave with
If it was something I currently own, it would bhe the 6/8 Tim Zowada Damascus.
Hefty hunk o' steel that shaves like a dream when you have it dialed in.
And it has a thumbnotch!:tu
P.S.- ask me again and I'll tell you it's another one!:p
I really like that Le Grelot, Seraphim. If I didn't mind a round point, I would grab one in a second. I just don't find them to be as precise... probably just a question of my technique.
I should have mentioned that I would like a thumb notch and maybe even a top notch on my imaginary custom blade. At least I think I would... I know I like the thumb notch, but I've never held a razor with a top notch.
I have many different razors. I love Wade and Butcher, but I think my Livi has to be the winner hands down. Not only a great shaver, but feels good in your hand. I'm a firm believe in letting your razor rest 24-48 hours, with that being said, I'd have a minimum of two. One Livi, One Wade and Butcher, or a Duck. That's a close call...
That Zowada is a pricey piece of steel, How do you like? I wonder how that Damascus steel is when it comes to Honing?
My basic Fridour 5/8s. If I can only have one, I want it simple.
i only have three razors right now but if i had to pick from what i have it would be my dubl duck 7/8 goldedge the hairs jump off my face before the blade ever reach them or so it feels like
if it's one i currently have, my dovo SS 5/8 roundpoint with pearlex scales. for some reason i keep coming back to that one.
As I have said in a similar thread, it would be like asking a mother which of her dozen kids she loves the most. :shrug:
It would be a Zeepk.
At least then I’d be happy to go back to being a bearded gorilla, and think of all the money I’d save on Ebay.
My tastes change on a regular basis but my best shaver is a recently acquired Mappin & Webb 5/8 "Nulli Secundus" from a 7 day set. It is marked "Saturday" and comes with delicious looking Genuine Ivory scales. I enjoy it very much and thank Don for offering it on the classifieds. It gets regular use.
XMan, tell me more about your w&b who did the regrind or sanding on it, what was the grit it got taken to, scales etc. gorgeous!
I decline to answer as 1. I don't have enough experience and am still discovering my preferences and 2. what if my wife read this and thought I coudl get by with one razor? :o
so far best shaver is a 7/8 w&b wedge. next best was the thistle cut I sadly sold. however I have some promising ones to try out at some point. I have a couple of clement machetes I'm using that shave well but the handles are a bit bulky and balance/feel is a bit weird still. I'm working with them though. used one today and felt like it was going great.

I gave up long ago trying to figure that question out, but I have figured out what type of razor it would be....
Vintage without a doubt, I like the history
Width = 11/16
Length = 2 3/4 I love a slightly shorter razor
Grind = Extra Full Hollow (singing sweetly)
Scales = Cracked Ice
Steel = Solingen or American
Jimps = Yes top and bottom if possible
Point = Spike
Most of the razors in my personal rotation fall very close to these parameters....
Think it would have to be my 1840's 15/16 Fenney humpback with the fully swept full wedge blade. That way if I ever went terminal on the beard stakes I could use it to chop wood or peel spuds, strop it on the sole of my foot and it probably would still shave OK if the beard had to go. Man they made them tough back then!:medvl:
Definitely my Dovo because currently it's the only razor I have that can shave!
It would be hard for me becase I could be perfectly happy with only one of several from my current razors.
For example: my RW, the TIPTLE, a KK, my Novodur, the JL frameback, one of my Heljes, my Tiffany's JE frameback, the plain C&S, etc.
Heck, I can be very happy with a very basic blade, as long as it's in good condition and honed rght :)
Cheers
Ivo
A vintage C-Mon wedge.
blueprinciple, you have to post pics. can't just talk about it :)
George Wostenholm IXL 6/8 1/4 hollow India Steel. It only gets better as I improve my maintenance and shaving techniques. It responds well and looks meaner by the day. Even the bugs loved it! IXL forever! Robert
A sheffield quarter hollow from Victoria's reign. Around 6/8 I suppose with Stag, ivory, or mammoth ivory/dentin scales.
The problem with having RAD is that this question is almost impossible to answer. I would have to pick a straight that I already shaved with because my choice would have to be based on my experience and not someone else's opinion. It would also have to have some sentimental feeling behind it like a Father's day present or Christmas present or out perform all of those by a mile. I would also like for it to be used by the person I would be leaving it to.
I shave with every razor I own that can be made shave worthy (all but maybe three) and enjoy the shave with each and every one of them. Of course on some days one more than another, but that changes daily with what I had for breakfast and the exact position of the planets and stars. :gaah: :thinking:
So, using the constraints I noted above with the choice of only one I would pick my 7/8's 3/4 hollow Fridour square point. If I were to consider my son's choice on the matter it may be be the same or different but I do know for sure it would be as difficult for him to chose as it is for me. Ask me again tomorrow and my answer will probably be different. :p
What a beautiful razor Seraphim!
That dovo with that scale has to be one of the best looking razor I've seen. I'm absolutely dying to get one those with that scale! Make sure to let me know if you ever decide to sell it;)
